A day-long Job Fair aimed at creating employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled candidates in the fields of technology and technical education was held at the Jhenaidah Government Technical School and College. The event witnessed an overwhelming response, as over 6,000 CVs were submitted within just four hours before rain forced an abrupt halt to the proceedings.

Organized with the objective of connecting approximately 12,000 job seekers with potential employers, the fair brought together 11 recruiting organizations. These included Johan Dream Valley, Johan Agro Food, CEO, Srijoni Foundation, Walton, FNF Pharmaceuticals, Surf Agro, Freedom Advancement, Ayan Enterprise, and E-Learning and Earning.

From the early hours of the day, job seekers gathered at the booths of participating companies, engaged with recruiters, and submitted their résumés in person and via email. Companies accepted CVs for positions in mobile servicing, automobile and farm machinery, computer technology, electrical work, IT, and web development. In addition to the town of Jhenaidah, hundreds of educated youth from villages and upazilas across the district also attended the event.

However, a sudden spell of stormy weather brought the fair to an early end, disappointing both job seekers and employers. As a result, recruiters were unable to conduct on-spot interviews or shortlist candidates for immediate hiring. Still, there is no reason to despair, said Md. Monir Hossain, a teacher at the Jhenaidah Government Technical School and College and one of the event organizers.

Speaking to DigiBanglaTech over the phone, he confirmed that the participating companies assured them of proceeding with the recruitment process based on the CVs already submitted. “Those who are found eligible during the interviews will indeed secure employment. We hope that the natural setback won’t stand in their way. Even though the fair had to end, we are continuing our efforts. We will remain engaged with the recruiters to start the next phase of hiring soon,” he stated.

Nazmus Sakib, a graduate-level student who came from Sadhuhati, told reporters, “I came to the fair in search of a job alongside my studies. I submitted my CV to three companies. I believe such events will significantly contribute to reducing unemployment.”

Arif, a job seeker from Shailkupa, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “We came with high hopes and submitted our CVs. But due to the heavy rain, the fair had to be shut down. If we are called based on the submitted CVs, many unemployed youths will benefit.”

The fair was officially inaugurated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday (April 30) by Moazzem Hossain, President of the Jhenaidah Chamber of Commerce. Among others present were Dr. Anichur Rahman Mridha, Principal of Jhenaidah Government Technical School and College; Asif Kajol, President of the Jhenaidah Press Club; ABM Jahangir Hossain from Modern Pharmaceuticals; GM Alomgir Hossain; Yasin Ali, President of IDEB; Samayan Hossain, Principal of Shailkupa Technical School and College; and faculty members Hadiuzzaman, Abu Said, Moniruzzaman, and Humayun Kabir.

Commenting on the fair, Dr. Anichur Rahman Mridha said, “Our institution is being developed as a model for technical education so that students can contribute to their families through skilled employment.” He also noted that since its establishment in 1965, around 300 youths from the institution have gone abroad with technical skills. Recently, 40 students have gone to China on scholarships. “The workshop set up here during the Pakistan era still remains unmatched elsewhere,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Secondary and Higher Education Division has issued a directive to involve heads of educational institutions in co-curricular activities aimed at encouraging students to focus more on academics. The Ministry of Education hopes this move will reduce participation in irrelevant rallies and gatherings by school and college students in Dhaka and elsewhere.
