Speculations Surround Successor to Nahid Islam’s Adviser Role
Following the resignation of Nahid Islam from his position as adviser to the interim government for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, speculation is rife regarding his successor.
Reports suggest that Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, currently serving as the Policy Adviser (Coordination and Reform) at the Ministry of Information and Technology, is being considered for the role. Another potential candidate is Mahfuz Alam, known as the mastermind behind the liaison committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who was previously appointed as an adviser to the interim government.
There is also speculation that Mahfuz Alam may be assigned to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, while Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb could take charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology.
Ultimately, the final decision rests with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. Given his role as a special assistant to the Chief Adviser, some believe Mahfuz Alam has an edge in the selection process. However, Faiz’s international expertise in information technology makes it likely that he will be retained in some capacity.
Another source suggests that Chief Adviser Yunus initially favored Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam for the position of information adviser. However, since such an appointment would leave the government without a second official spokesperson for the media, the idea did not progress. Instead, Shafiqul Alam was granted senior status. Meanwhile, veteran journalist Monir Haidar was recently promoted to the rank of senior secretary and appointed as a special assistant to the Chief Adviser, primarily to support the Consensus Formation Commission led by Yunus. Given this context, Mahfuz Alam remains a strong contender for the information adviser role.
On Tuesday evening (February 25), a reliable source within the interim government indicated that while Mahfuz Alam is likely to be appointed as an adviser, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb will also be assigned a significant role within the interim administration.
