Students at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) held a symbolic protest rally titled '56?' demanding the reinstatement of former Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem. The program commenced on Sunday (September 27) at 2:00 PM at the Central Shaheed Minar, where residents from all nine halls gathered holding red placards with '56?' written on them. Chanting slogans such as "One demand, one call, VC Sayem above all," the demonstrators questioned the abrupt removal of Dr. Sayem after serving just 56 days in office.
Following a march from the Shaheed Minar to Swadhinata Chattar, students held a sit-in demonstration. Ayesha Karim Soha, a first-year Computer Science and Engineering student, voiced their grievance, stating that the campus remains deeply grateful for the administrative advancements initiated by Dr. Sayem during his brief tenure.
During the subsequent '56 Corner' event, Mostafa Khalid Bin Shams, a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student, presented 12 modernization initiatives undertaken by Dr. Sayem. At 3:00 PM, a satirical street drama was staged, mocking the virtual assumption of office by the new Vice Chancellor and depicting the underlying politics behind removing Dr. Sayem after a 56-day term.
