Shopify Opens Checkout to AI Agents for Automated Shopping
While global brands such as Amazon and Adidas are tightening restrictions on AI-powered shopping on e-commerce platforms, Shopify has announced a move in the opposite direction. The company is giving open, browser-based AI agents full access to complete purchases, including the checkout process, on its platform.
As a result, AI agents will no longer be limited to searching for products or adding items to shopping carts. With the customer’s explicit authorisation, they will also be able to complete the entire payment process automatically.
Technical Protocol and How It Works
At the heart of Shopify’s new system is the WebMCP protocol, which enables AI agents to access structured APIs and retrieve information without relying on human-oriented HTML code or screenshots.
The system introduces three new tools—Get Checkout, Update Checkout and Complete Checkout—allowing AI agents to read checkout details directly and modify customers’ addresses or delivery options.
As the entire process operates under Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol, transactions can be completed accurately and quickly through Shop Pay.
Partnerships and the Future of E-Commerce
Leading AI agent platforms, including Muse and Instinct, have already signed agreements to integrate directly with Shopify’s agentic commerce capabilities. The feature is now being rolled out globally to eligible Shopify merchants.
This move towards AI agents completing purchases, either with customers’ direct instructions or through delegated authorisation, could significantly reshape the future of online shopping and the e-commerce industry.
