Health Minister stresses expanding clinical roles of pharmacists to ensure patient-centric healthcare
World Pharmacists Day Celebrated at UAP, Industry Stalwarts Honoured

DHAKA: Recognizing the pivotal contributions of pharmacists to public health infrastructure and celebrating clinical excellence, the School of Pharmacy at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) observed World Pharmacists Day 2026. The commemorative program was convened at the UAP Auditorium on Saturday, 26 September 2026, anchored by the global theme “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.”
A major highlight of the symposium was conferring prestigious institutional honors upon prominent figures across regulatory compliance, national healthcare governance, and higher academic research.
From the statutory and regulatory sector, citations were conferred upon Md. Alamgir Hossain, Director General of the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA); Professor Dr. Md. Aslam Hossain, Member of the University Grants Commission (UGC); Professor Dr. Md. Shah Amran, Member of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council (BAC); and Muhammad Mahbubul Hoque, Secretary of the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh (PCB).
For academic pedagogy and foundational scientific research, honors were awarded to Emeritus Professor Dr. Chowdhury Mahmood Hasan and Emeritus Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rashid of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Dhaka; UAP Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan; Rajshahi University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamunur Rashid; Noakhali Science and Technology University Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Shafiqul Islam; Jahangirnagar University Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Sohel Rana; and Dhaka University Pharmacy Dean Professor Dr. Md. Selim Reza.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain attended the symposium as chief guest. The event hosted Professor Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Dhaka, and K. M. Mojibul Hoque, Chairman of the UAP Board of Trustees, as special guests, with UAP Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan presiding.
The observance commenced with a colorful academic rally, followed by an inaugural welcome from UAP Pharmacy Department Head Professor Dr. Zebun Nahar. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shahriar, Dean of the UAP School of Pharmacy, subsequently presented an institutional report detailing the department's cutting-edge pharmaceutical research milestones.
In his address, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain affirmed, "Pharmacists serve as an indispensable bridge between therapeutic science and patient safety. To transform Bangladesh's public health delivery into an effective, accessible, and citizen-friendly architecture, we must systematically broaden the institutional role of qualified pharmacists across hospitals and primary health facilities."
Concluding the symposium, Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan emphasized that nurturing ethically disciplined, research-driven pharmacy professionals is paramount to meeting escalating global healthcare benchmarks, reiterating UAP's institutional commitment to pharmaceutical innovation.
