Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo has pledged to ensure fair compensation for farmers allegedly affected by industrial waste discharged from the Comilla Export Processing Zone (EPZ), warning that he is prepared to pursue legal action if necessary to protect their rights.
Speaking as the chief guest at a special public consultation meeting held on Sunday afternoon at the grounds of Bijoypur Women's College, the minister said compensation for the affected farmers must be ensured and that he would be willing to take the matter to court, if required.
The meeting was organized to hear directly from local farming families who claim to have suffered significant losses due to industrial waste allegedly released from the EPZ, resulting in damage to agricultural land and local biodiversity.
Addressing the gathering, the minister emphasized that while industrialization remains essential for economic growth, environmental protection and the preservation of a healthy living environment are equally important.
“Economic development and environmental conservation must go hand in hand. One cannot come at the expense of the other,” he said.
Sharing his observations from the affected area, the minister said he was deeply disturbed by the current condition of the water in the Guingajuri Canal.
According to him, the extent of environmental degradation visible in the canal is unacceptable and demands urgent intervention.
He assured local residents that he would hold a formal meeting with EPZ authorities within the current week to discuss the issue and seek an effective resolution.
Among the special guests at the event was Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Member of Parliament for Cumilla-6.
The consultation was also attended by several political and community leaders, including representatives from local BNP and farmers' organizations, as well as hundreds of members of farming families who say they have been affected by the industrial waste problem.
The minister’s remarks signal a tougher stance on environmental accountability, particularly in cases where industrial activities may have harmed agricultural livelihoods and local ecosystems.
Residents and environmental advocates will now be closely watching the outcome of the planned discussions between the ministry and EPZ authorities, as affected communities continue to seek compensation and long-term solutions to the environmental challenges facing the area.
