Fuel Prices Rise Again: Government Increases Octane, Petrol and Kerosene by Tk 5 Per Litre
May 31, 2026 23:57

The government has announced another increase in fuel prices, raising the retail prices of all petroleum products except diesel by Tk 5 per litre. The revised rates have been set in line with international market prices and will take effect nationwide from Monday, June 1.

The decision was announced through an official gazette notification issued by the Power Division and the Energy and Mineral Resources Division on Sunday night.

New Fuel Prices

According to the notification, the new consumer-level fuel prices are:

Fuel Type Previous Price (Tk/Litre) New Price (Tk/Litre)
Octane 140 145
Petrol 135 140
Kerosene 130 135
Diesel 115 115

Under the revised pricing structure, octane has increased from Tk 140 to Tk 145 per litre, while petrol has risen from Tk 135 to Tk 140 per litre. Kerosene prices have also been increased from Tk 130 to Tk 135 per litre.

However, the price of diesel—widely used in public transportation, freight services, and agriculture—has been kept unchanged at Tk 115 per litre, providing some relief to consumers and transport operators.

Second Increase in Less Than Two Months

This is the second fuel price adjustment within approximately six weeks.

On April 19, the government implemented a significant round of increases, raising diesel prices by Tk 15 per litre, octane by Tk 20, petrol by Tk 19, and kerosene by Tk 18 per litre. Following that revision, diesel and kerosene prices were set at Tk 115 and Tk 130 per litre respectively, while octane and petrol reached Tk 140 and Tk 135 per litre.

Potential Economic Impact

The latest price adjustment is expected to draw attention from businesses, transport operators, and consumers, as fuel costs play a critical role in transportation and supply-chain expenses. While the decision to keep diesel prices unchanged may help limit immediate pressure on public transport and goods transportation costs, the increase in petrol, octane, and kerosene prices could still influence overall living expenses and market prices in the coming weeks.

Economists and market observers will now be watching closely to assess how the latest fuel price hike affects transportation costs, commodity prices, and household expenditures across the country.
