Developers Divided as Discontent Grows Over Generative AI in Gaming
Discontent over the use of generative artificial intelligence in the video game industry has risen to its highest level yet. According to the State of the Game Industry 2026 report published by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), more than half of surveyed developers believe that generative AI is having a negative impact on the gaming industry. GameSpot reported the findings.
The survey included responses from 2,300 game developers worldwide. Among them, 36 percent said they had used generative AI in some form. However, this usage has largely been limited to research and ideation stages, with management-level employees adopting the technology more frequently than general developers. As an external tool, ChatGPT emerged as the most commonly used platform.
According to the report, 52 percent of developers said generative AI is negatively affecting the game industry—up sharply from 30 percent last year. Only 7 percent reported a positive impact. One developer even commented that they would rather leave the industry altogether than work with generative AI.
Experts note that while the use of generative AI is increasing behind the scenes, resistance is intensifying when it comes to AI-generated content that is directly presented to players.
