Although e-return filing has not been made mandatory for expatriate Bangladeshis, many are voluntarily submitting their income tax returns online. As of Monday, January 12, in the ongoing 2025–26 tax year, around 4.553 million taxpayers have registered on the e-return system, while 3.188 million taxpayers have already filed their returns online.

Sharing the updated figures, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Public Relations Officer Al Amin Sheikh said that expatriate Bangladeshis have shown a strong response to the e-return system. Through a special order this year, the NBR has made online income tax return submission mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged or specially-abled taxpayers, Bangladeshis residing abroad, legal representatives filing returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

On August 4 last year, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the online e-return filing system for the 2025–26 tax year through the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.

According to the NBR, although online return submission is not compulsory for Bangladeshis living abroad, they can still register and file returns online by sending their passport number, national ID number, email address, and other relevant information to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd. Upon application, an OTP and registration link are sent to the applicant’s email address, enabling expatriate taxpayers to complete registration and easily submit income tax returns online.

The NBR official further said that so far around 5,000 expatriate Bangladeshis have successfully completed registration on the e-return system using OTPs sent to their email addresses. Of them, 3,300 expatriate taxpayers have already paid income tax online from abroad and successfully submitted their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year.

He added that, on average, around 100 expatriate taxpayers every day are availing e-return-related services by emailing the NBR’s e-Tax Management Unit while residing overseas.
