DMP Dismisses Facebook Fear Over Fascist Awami League Footage
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali has said there is no reason to be alarmed by Facebook videos posted by the banned political party, the Awami League. Referring to the group’s recent processions and gatherings, he remarked that while their number of political programs has increased slightly, most of them are confined to social media activities.
“Many come by night coaches, display banners for a short time, record videos, and upload them on Facebook. It gives the impression of a large rally, but in reality, it is not. We cannot deny the power of social media, but there is no reason to panic,” the DMP chief told reporters.
He made the remarks on Thursday, October 23, while speaking to journalists after the ‘Road Safety Seminar’ jointly organized by DMP and JICA at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka.
Expressing optimism about a “neutral and credible environment” ahead of the upcoming national elections, Commissioner Sajjat Ali also cautioned that “a party which had been in power for a long time but is now banned may try to create confusion.”
He added, “By late November, a wonderful electoral environment will emerge. Everyone is now facing the election. People want to vote. It is unfortunate that many citizens aged between 35 and 40 have never voted in their lives.”
The commissioner further said that although the banned party is attempting to cause unrest through cocktail explosions and sabotage, “we are on maximum alert to ensure no anti-state activities take place.”
