BSCPLC Breaks Bandwidth Barrier with 4.00 Tbps Milestone
Bangladesh Submarine Cable PLC (BSCPLC), the state-owned telecom company listed on the stock exchange, has surpassed the milestone of 4.00 terabits per second (Tbps) in real-time international internet traffic. This new achievement was recorded on August 1, shortly after BSCPLC began supplying 200 gigabits of bandwidth to the country’s newly launched commercial satellite-based internet service in July.
Previously, on April 28, BSCPLC had reached the 3.00 Tbps mark. Within just three months, the company increased its capacity by another terabit—while it had taken eight months prior to April to add just 1.10 Tbps. During the tenure of the previous Awami League government, over 65 percent of BSCPLC’s capacity had reportedly remained unutilized.
Sources attribute the recent surge in capacity utilization to directives and policy support from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, along with proactive management and a series of price discounts. As BSCPLC's share in the national bandwidth consumption has grown, so too has the company’s revenue collection.
It has also been reported that the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) recently amended its licensing guidelines, requiring all International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators to source at least 50 percent of their bandwidth from submarine cable networks. To encourage this further, BSCPLC has introduced additional discounts for IIG operators using more than 50 percent of their total bandwidth from submarine sources. The company has also announced separate internet packages tailored for data centers, cloud providers, and hyperscalers—beyond its regular bulk discount packages.
As a result, during the current government's tenure, BSCPLC has added over 2.2 Tbps to its supply, with more than 105 percent year-on-year growth achieved in just one year.
In a related development, the government has approved a revised route for the country’s third submarine cable in the latest ECNEC meeting. Once operational, this new connection will add an additional 17 Tbps to BSCPLC’s real-time internet capacity, further expanding the company’s footprint in global internet infrastructure.
