WHO to Support BMU in Strengthening Infection Control

The World Health Organization (WHO) will support Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in implementing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures. To this end, a delegation from WHO met with BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam at his office on Tuesday, July 8.

The WHO delegation was led by Sangay Wangmo, Team Lead for Health Systems at the WHO Country Office in Bangladesh, and included Dr. Murad Sultan, National Professional Officer for Quality Health Systems under the IPC program. Representing BMU were Professor Dr. Md. Atikul Haque Tuhin, Chair of the Department of Public Health and Informatics; Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Shakur, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Brigadier General Abu Noman Mohammad Mosleh Uddin, Director of the BMU Hospital.

During the meeting, WHO pledged to work closely with BMU to transform the university's hospital and laboratories into a national model for IPC. The organization also committed to contributing to human resource development and helping to establish a practical and effective IPC system.

According to university officials, “The IPC initiative will place equal emphasis on healthcare providers' operational practices and patients' needs.”

University sources indicated that the meeting underscored sustainable behavioral changes in IPC practices and aimed to establish BMU as a benchmark for other healthcare institutions in the country. Key topics included hygiene protocols, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), waste management, vaccination, awareness campaigns, and training initiatives.

Infection Prevention and Control is a critical component of healthcare delivery, essential for preventing the spread of disease and protecting both patients and healthcare workers in hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities.
