Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) held a ‘Red Card’ protest on Saturday, September 26, 2026, rejecting the online joining of the university’s newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam.
The protest began at 2pm on the road in front of the university’s Medical Centre, as students displayed red cards in opposition to the new vice-chancellor joining the university online.
The protesters later brought out a procession carrying red cards. The procession marched around the university’s Swadhinata Chattar before gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar premises, where students held a protest rally.
During the rally, students chanted slogans including “Online VC red card, red card, red card”, “We do not accept, we do not accept the online VC”, “Reject, reject, reject the online VC” and “We want Sayem Sir”.
Sakibur Rahman, a fourth-year student of the Department of Civil Engineering, said, “We have already seen that within 56 days, Sayem Sir made his utmost effort to modernise CUET through various student-friendly initiatives. The person appointed as the new vice-chancellor described our movement in his statement as a movement of 30 to 35 people. But hundreds of students from every residential hall are voluntarily participating in this movement. We strongly reject his objectionable statement and his online joining.”
Earlier, students took position at the university’s main gate from Friday night to prevent the new vice-chancellor from joining. They also held protest programmes at different locations on the campus on Saturday morning.
