ICT Official Appointed Sylhet Deputy Commissioner

Bangladesh's Ministry of Public Administration has appointed Abdullah Al Mamun, a Deputy Secretary from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, as the new Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Magistrate of Sylhet.

The appointment, announced on Thursday, places an ICT-focused administrative official in charge of one of the country's key district administrations, raising expectations for stronger digital governance and technology-driven public service delivery.

The position became vacant after former DC Sarwar Alam was transferred to the Ministry of Public Administration on June 21. Although Cumilla DC Md. Reza Hasan was later appointed to Sylhet, he did not assume the post before a fresh notification named Abdullah Al Mamun as the district's new administrator.

Having served in the ICT Division, Abdullah Al Mamun brings experience in digital public services, e-governance implementation, and technology-enabled administrative coordination. His appointment is expected to strengthen the adoption of digital systems and citizen-centric governance at the district level.

The leadership change follows public debate surrounding administrative measures taken at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R), including changes to donation box management. However, government officials have described the transfer as part of a routine administrative reshuffle.

Public administration experts believe assigning ICT-experienced officers to field administration supports Bangladesh's broader digital transformation agenda by accelerating smart governance, data-driven administration, digital service delivery, and technology-enabled public management.
