Bangladesh has approved its National Renewable Energy Development Strategy (2026–2030), placing advanced energy technologies and digital infrastructure at the center of the country's transition toward a cleaner and lower-carbon power sector.

The strategy targets 20 percent of total electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, while also aiming to reduce electricity consumption by at least 15 percent through demand-side energy management. The roadmap is designed to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security, and support Bangladesh's climate commitments.

A major technological focus of the strategy is the deployment of rooftop solar systems, smart grids, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), net metering, OPEX financing models, floating solar plants, solar-powered irrigation, waste-to-energy facilities, wind and hydropower projects, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The strategy identifies Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as a critical technology for stabilizing renewable energy by storing excess electricity generated from intermittent sources such as solar and wind before supplying it to the national grid. In parallel, smart grid technologies will enable digital control of electricity generation, distribution, and consumption, improving grid efficiency, resilience, and reliability.

Environmental sustainability also receives significant attention through commitments to establish solar panel and battery recycling systems alongside comprehensive electronic waste (e-waste) management. These measures aim to minimize environmental impacts associated with the rapid expansion of clean energy technologies.

To accelerate investment, the government plans to introduce a Renewable Energy Fund, carbon credit mechanisms, concessional financing, credit guarantees, tax incentives, rationalized import duties, and special support for domestic manufacturing of solar panels, batteries, and related components, strengthening Bangladesh's emerging CleanTech ecosystem.

A key digital governance initiative within the strategy is the launch of a real-time online monitoring dashboard, enabling authorities to track renewable energy generation, project implementation, and overall progress through a centralized digital platform. Regular inter-ministerial coordination and oversight by a National Policy Council will further support data-driven decision-making and accountability.

The strategy also prioritizes workforce development by expanding technical training programs in renewable energy technologies while targeting at least 30 percent female participation, promoting inclusive growth within Bangladesh's clean energy sector.
