Bangladesh Loses a Renowned Space Researcher
NASA Scientist Rezaul Haque Dies in the United States
Bangladeshi scientist of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Dr. M. Rezaul Haque, is no more. He passed away in the United States on Thursday evening (14 May), Bangladesh time. He was 80 years old at the time of his death.
Dr. Rezaul Haque hailed from Kellabaruipara area of Godagari Municipality in Rajshahi. He leaves behind his wife, two daughters, and numerous admirers.
Following his death, the Minister of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Fakir Mahbub Anam, expressed deep shock and sorrow. In a condolence message on Friday (15 May), he said that Rezaul Haque, a proud son of Godagari upazila in Rajshahi, was a proud face of Bangladesh in the international arena. His outstanding contributions to science and research would remain a source of inspiration for the nation. The minister also said that the country has lost a talented scientist and distinguished personality.
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
In addition, Post and Telecommunications Division Secretary Bilkis Jahan Rimi, ICT Division Secretary Kazi Anwar Hossain, and Science and Technology Ministry Secretary Md. Anwar Hossain expressed condolences over the death of Dr. Rezaul Haque, the maternal uncle of adviser Rehana Asif Asad on Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Affairs and Science and Technology Affairs to the Prime Minister.
According to family sources, Dr. Rezaul Haque began his career as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at a state university in Colorado, United States. He later joined NASA as a scientist. After retiring a few years ago, he had been living permanently in the United States.
His father was the late Fahim Uddin Biswas and his mother was the late Anwara Khatun. Among nine siblings, he was the third. His elder brother was the late Barrister Aminul Haque, former Vice Chairman of BNP and former minister. Another elder brother, the late Dr. M. Enamul Haque, served as Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Bangladesh Police. His younger brother, Major General (Retd.) Sharif Uddin, is currently serving as an adviser to the BNP Chairperson.
Family members said that he will be buried in the United States. A symbolic (absentia) funeral prayer was held after the Jumu’ah prayer at Kellabaruipara Jame Mosque in Godagari Municipality on Friday.
