SUST Student Goes Missing While Swimming in Bichanakandi Tourist Area in Sylhet
A student of the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has gone missing after entering a water body for bathing while visiting the Bichanakandi tourist area in Sylhet.
The missing student has been identified as Shanto Banik, a 2023–24 academic session student of the university.
The incident occurred around 4:00 pm on Friday, 15 May, in a water body located in the Bichanakandi tourist area near the India–Bangladesh border. As of 6:45 pm, no trace of the student had been found.
Bichanakandi Tourist Police Camp In-Charge Md. Faruk confirmed the matter, saying that they received information about the incident at around 4:50 pm. He added that a diving rescue team departed from Sylhet but had not reached the site until around 6:20 pm. He expressed hope that rescue operations would begin shortly.
He further said that the incident took place in a water body adjacent to the no-man’s land area along the Bangladesh–India border. Three individuals had entered the water for bathing together; two managed to return safely, while Shanto Banik went missing.
Local residents attempted to rescue him using boats but were unsuccessful until evening. Authorities said that a formal rescue operation would begin once the diving team arrives at the scene.
