Anthropic Takes Super Bowl Swipe at OpenAI Over Ads
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has publicly taken a swipe at rival OpenAI by leveraging the massive platform of the United States’ most popular sporting event, the Super Bowl. According to a report by Reuters, Anthropic is airing a multi-million-dollar television advertisement during Super Bowl LX, criticizing plans to introduce advertisements into ChatGPT.
The 30-second commercial uses suggestive imagery to highlight how advertisements could eventually infiltrate AI-powered services. The ad concludes with a clear and pointed message: “Ads are coming to AI — but not to Claude.” Claude is Anthropic’s proprietary chatbot.
The advertisement has drawn criticism from OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman. In a post on social media platform X, Altman described the commercial as “misleading” and stated that OpenAI would never do anything that undermines user trust.
Analysts say that while such high-profile advertising campaigns may not be immediately profitable, this open rivalry between the two AI companies could help strengthen their brand identities amid intense competition for market dominance. At the same time, the campaign is being viewed as an attempt to reduce public skepticism about artificial intelligence by capitalizing on the Super Bowl’s vast audience reach.
