Lunar Location Leap: Spain’s GMV Develops Moon Navigation System

Spanish aerospace company GMV has announced the development of a GPS-like navigation system for the Moon. The project, named Luna Positioning System (LUPIN), is being implemented in collaboration with the European Space Agency, according to a report by Engadget.

The system will utilize signals from existing satellites in lunar orbit to provide real-time location data for astronauts, rovers, and future lunar settlers.

GMV noted that current communication infrastructure on the Moon faces limitations, such as reliance on direct line-of-sight with Earth or relay satellites, which results in signal delays and hampers real-time decision-making.

Project Director Steven Kaye stated, “This technology will move Europe closer to establishing a human presence on the Moon and could eventually become part of preparations for a Mars mission.”
