Egypt Bans Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns
Egypt has banned the popular online gaming platform Roblox for all users, according to reports by Bloomberg, with the country’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation coordinating the implementation with the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, news portal Engadget reported.
State media cited Senator Walaa Harmas Radwandid, who proposed the regulation to protect children’s “moral and educational values.” Concerns highlighted include the possibility of direct contact with strangers and the potential psychological and behavioral impact on young users.
In response, Roblox issued a statement emphasizing that its platform has stricter safety measures compared to many other services.
With this decision, Egypt joins Iraq, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, where Roblox is either banned or heavily restricted. Turkey and Russia have also recently blocked the platform entirely.
Roblox has a significant presence in the Middle East and North Africa. According to the company, between 2021 and 2024, Roblox contributed approximately $15 million to domestic production in Egypt and several other countries in the region.
