Bangladesh has once again been elected as a member of the Council of Administration (CA) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) at its 28th Congress. The election took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday, 18 September. This marks the eighth time Bangladesh has secured membership in the prestigious UPU-CA.

The Council of Administration, one of the most significant organs of the Universal Postal Union, plays a crucial role not only in overseeing administrative functions but also in fostering the development of global postal services. Its responsibilities include taking decisions for the advancement of international postal services, implementing resolutions adopted at the Congress, formulating and coordinating technical assistance projects, approving annual budgets, managing funds, determining member states’ contribution rates, creating or abolishing positions in the International Bureau, approving human resource development programs, and adopting research and policy initiatives.

During the tenure of Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, 50 easy bikes were allocated for field-level postal runners through UPU financial assistance. This initiative has contributed positively to improving service delivery.

Bangladesh’s success in this election was made possible through the diplomatic efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and initiatives taken by the Office of the Chief Adviser.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Abdun Naser Khan, the Director General of the Bangladesh Post Office, officials from the Posts and Telecommunications Division and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Bangladeshi Ambassador stationed in Dubai, all made sincere contributions to this achievement.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations, works to establish and coordinate global postal policies. With its re-election, Bangladesh is expected to play an even more active role in modernizing the global postal sector, expanding e-commerce and digital postal services, and strengthening international cooperation.

This achievement will further consolidate Bangladesh’s postal and telecommunication sector in the international arena and enhance the country’s image worldwide.
