OpenAI Finally Launches Dedicated ChatGPT App for Linux
Ending a long wait for the open-source developer community, artificial intelligence research company OpenAI has finally launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for the Linux operating system. While the service was already available on Windows and Mac computers, Linux users had until now been unable to use an official desktop app directly. The move expands access to ChatGPT and Codex across all major desktop operating systems.
Initially released worldwide as a preview version, the new app gives Linux users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, OpenAI’s specialised technology for programming assistance.
OpenAI said the app will work directly on the desktop editions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Although Linux has numerous distributions, the app can also be run on other compatible flavours and downstream distributions based on these platforms.
OpenAI Follows Anthropic
Although OpenAI has arrived somewhat later than rival AI company Anthropic, it has now brought the same convenience to its Linux users. About a month ago, Anthropic launched its Claude desktop app for Linux, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 and later and Debian 12 and later.
With the launch of its own Linux desktop app, OpenAI is expected to make it easier for Linux developers and technology enthusiasts to access ChatGPT and Codex under one platform, while further expanding access to the broader AI ecosystem.
