Alibaba Unveils New AI Models to Make Robots Smarter and More Capable

Chinese technology and e-commerce giant Alibaba has unveiled a new suite of artificial intelligence (AI) models designed to make robots significantly more intelligent and capable, moving beyond traditional chatbot functions. The company says the technology will enable robots not only to engage in natural conversations but also to perform complex real-world tasks autonomously.

The new AI package for robotics was officially introduced on Tuesday. According to technology analysts, China's tech industry is increasingly shifting its focus from conventional chatbots and messaging systems toward developing autonomous AI agents capable of enhancing the intelligence and efficiency of machines, offering substantial commercial potential.

Developed jointly by Alibaba’s research division, DAMO Academy, and its cloud computing arm, the new technology is called the Qwen-Robot Suite. The package consists of three core models designed to assist robots in different operational scenarios.

One model enables robots to recognize objects in their surroundings and generate precise instructions for grasping and manipulating them. Another model focuses on navigation, allowing robots to move through unfamiliar environments independently and efficiently.

In a demonstration video released by the company, a robot powered by the new AI models was shown identifying different fruits and placing them into baskets without human assistance. While such a task may appear simple to humans, accurately recognizing objects and performing delicate physical movements requires sophisticated mathematical calculations and advanced AI capabilities.

Alibaba has announced that the models will be released as open-source technology, allowing robotics researchers and engineers worldwide to use and build upon them free of charge. The company is currently conducting practical trials of the technology in collaboration with several leading Chinese robotics manufacturers.

Industry observers note that the initiative is aimed not only at competing with technological advancements in the United States and other Western countries but also at accelerating the deployment of robots in factories and physical labor-intensive sectors, where they could increasingly serve as alternatives to human workers in the future.
