US Lifts Export Restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI Models

The United States has lifted export restrictions on two advanced artificial intelligence models—Mythos 5 and Fable 5—developed by leading American AI company Anthropic. Following approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the company has announced that customers will once again be able to access both models starting July 1.

Just two weeks ago, the U.S. government issued an emergency order requiring Anthropic to suspend the use of the newly launched AI models.

Under the directive, the company was instructed to prevent access to the models by any foreign nationals located within the United States, including its own foreign employees. To comply with the legal order, Anthropic temporarily disabled all services related to Mythos 5 and Fable 5.

Limited Access Before Full Reinstatement

Before lifting the restrictions, the U.S. government granted approximately 100 designated organizations responsible for managing and protecting the country's critical information technology infrastructure special permission to use Mythos 5.

The authorization was issued under a cybersecurity initiative known as Project Glowing, as Mythos 5 is regarded as one of the world's most capable AI models for cybersecurity applications.

However, uncertainty remained over the future of Fable 5, which is designed for broader public use.

Government Approval with Security Conditions

According to a report by the Financial Times, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic through an official letter that restrictions on Fable 5 would also be lifted.

Before receiving approval, Anthropic was required to commit to implementing proactive safeguards and continuous monitoring to address potential security risks and prevent misuse of the models.

Earlier Security Concerns

Earlier, several major technology companies, including Amazon, warned the U.S. government that Anthropic's latest AI models could potentially be jailbroken and exploited for criminal or malicious activities.

Those concerns prompted the Department of Commerce to impose the temporary restrictions on both models.

Anthropic, however, consistently defended the security architecture of its AI systems. With the latest government decision, the company has now secured full approval to restore public access to both Mythos 5 and Fable 5.
