SpaceX to Build Dedicated Natural Gas Pipeline in Texas to Fuel Starship Launches

SpaceX is planning to construct its own natural gas pipeline in the U.S. state of Texas to ensure a dedicated fuel supply for its giant Starship rocket. The proposed 8-mile pipeline will support the company's growing launch operations, according to a report by Reuters.

Documents related to the project indicate that the pipeline will run from the Port of Brownsville to Starbase, SpaceX's launch facility in Texas. Construction is expected to begin next month, with the pipeline targeted to become fully operational by January 2026.

The 16-inch-diameter pipeline will transport natural gas directly to Starbase, where it will be processed into liquid methane, the primary fuel used by the Starship rocket. To support this operation, SpaceX has already submitted engineering plans for a natural gas liquefaction facility to be built at the launch site.

At present, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) permits SpaceX to conduct up to 25 Starship launches per year. Since the first test flight in April 2023, the company has successfully completed 12 Starship launches.

Each Starship launch requires approximately 630,000 gallons of liquid methane, which has so far been transported to Starbase by hundreds of tanker trucks. The new pipeline is expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and logistical complexity.

However, the project has raised concerns among local environmental groups. The areas surrounding Starbase are considered environmentally sensitive wetlands, and conservationists warn that pipeline construction and additional excavation could threaten the region's ecological balance and wildlife habitats.
