The World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the world’s leading body representing engineers, and the Institution of Engineers Indonesia (PII) jointly organized the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026 Global Conference from March 3–5 in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia.

An eight-member delegation from the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB)—the apex body representing the engineering profession in the country—participated in the global conference.

The IEB delegation included:
IEB Vice-President (HRD) Engineer Sheikh Al Amin, Vice-President (Services and Welfare) Engineer Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan, Vice-President (Administration and Finance) Engineer A. T. M. Tanbir-ul Hasan (Tamal), Honorary Assistant General Secretary (Administration and Finance) Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Russell, Honorary Assistant General Secretary (Academic and International) Engineer Mohammad Mahbub Alam, Honorary Assistant General Secretary (HRD) Engineer Md. Noor Amin, Honorary Assistant General Secretary (Services and Welfare) Engineer Sabbir Ahmed Osmani, and Chairman of the Chemical Engineering Department Professor Dr. Engineer Salma Akhtar.

Organized under the direct supervision and support of UNESCO, the theme of this year’s World Engineering Day was “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.”

The conference emphasized the indispensable role of engineering in achieving sustainable development, particularly highlighting engineering’s contribution to implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

The international conference was attended by ministers and senior government officials from various countries, heads of international and regional organizations, leaders of multilateral development institutions, executives from industry and financial sectors, top figures from universities and research institutions, and representatives of the global science and engineering community.

High-level discussions at the conference focused on priority issues related to innovation, digitalization, and the development of sustainable and resilient infrastructure.

On March 3, meetings of WFEO’s Executive Council, Executive Board, and other governance bodies were held, where strategic directions, key initiatives, and decisions related to the implementation of the World Engineering Day 2026 theme were discussed. On March 4, strategies and future plans for industrial growth, innovation, and infrastructure development were formulated. On March 5, discussions centered on WFEO’s activities, technical depth, and practical applications.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Honorary Assistant General Secretary (Administration and Finance) Engineer Muhammad Ahsanul Russell said that engineers from 32 countries were introduced to Bangladesh’s engineering expertise and capabilities.

He added that the election manifesto, vision, and mission related to the engineering profession of newly elected Prime Minister Tarek Rahman were also presented to representatives from different countries. Furthermore, he noted that comprehensive cooperation was sought to connect Bangladesh with the global network, enhance the country’s technical capacity, and address unemployment through the development of engineering skills.
