Japanese technology giant Sony has announced a historic shift in the video game industry, revealing that it will completely discontinue the production of physical disc-based games for its PlayStation consoles. The decision will take effect in January 2028, after which all new PlayStation games will be available only through digital downloads purchased from the PlayStation Store or via digital codes sold by retailers.

Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer preferences and gaming habits. Digital game sales have significantly surpassed physical disc sales in recent years, with CD-based titles accounting for only 3 percent of the company's total gaming revenue last year. The launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) in 2024 without a built-in disc drive had already signaled the company's long-term direction toward an all-digital gaming ecosystem.

The company clarified that physical games released before January 2028, or already scheduled for release, will not be affected. However, the long-term impact on the gaming market is expected to be substantial. In particular, the thriving second-hand game market is likely to disappear, as players will no longer be able to resell or exchange completed games without physical discs. The move is also expected to deal a significant blow to retail stores specializing in gaming products.

The transition toward digital distribution had already gained momentum after game developer Rockstar Games announced that its highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) would not be released on disc. Sony's competitor Xbox has also been steadily embracing digital distribution, while Nintendo, traditionally the strongest supporter of physical cartridge games, has increasingly encouraged digital purchases by offering lower prices for downloadable titles. Although the shift is disappointing for game preservation advocates and collectors, digital distribution significantly reduces production and distribution costs for major publishers such as Sony.

Alongside ending physical game production, Sony also announced the permanent closure of the online PlayStation Stores for its legacy PlayStation 3 (PS3) console and the handheld PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). The stores will begin shutting down in some markets from August 2026 and will be fully discontinued in the United States by July 2027. After the closures, users will no longer be able to purchase new games or content for these older platforms, although previously purchased titles will remain available for download for a limited period.

In its statement, Sony said the PS3 and PS Vita represented an important chapter in PlayStation's history, adding that the decision to close their online stores "was not an easy one."
