The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has launched a crackdown on illegal GPS tracking service providers, causing significant disruption for thousands of users.

As per reports, the BTRC is shutting down servers of vehicle tracking service (VTS) companies operating without proper licenses. Recently, action was taken against three companies—Motolock, Taslock, and Sinotrack—for running unlicensed operations, leading to the shutdown of their servers. In a related incident last year, three individuals were arrested in Dhaka for illegally selling Motolock and Taslock GPS trackers, remotes, and frequency devices. These companies were warned at the time.

In its ongoing efforts, the BTRC has blocked at least 36 links, IP addresses, and servers associated with unauthorized services. Internet service providers (ISPs), International Internet Gateways (IIGs), and telecom operators have also been instructed to comply with BTRC’s directives. Additionally, the commission is investigating how large quantities of SIM cards were procured without authorization.

The shutdown of illegal servers has left thousands of users relying on these services in difficult situations. Customers of Taslock, Motolock, Sinotrack, and other unlicensed operators are facing disruptions. Moreover, the BTRC has recently revoked the licenses of four VTS companies as part of its efforts to regulate the use of illegal GPS services.

Industry experts and regulatory authorities are urging users to opt for licensed and authorized VTS providers. They warn that the crackdown on unauthorized operators will continue, which could lead to the sudden blocking of their services at any time.

The Vehicle Tracking Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (VTSPAB) has welcomed the BTRC’s initiative, stating that it will encourage fair competition and inspire users to choose legitimate services.

Praising the BTRC’s actions, Mir Sharukh Islam, Managing Director of Bondstein Technologies Limited, said, “I believe this decision is timely and will have a positive impact on Bangladesh’s technology sector. It will motivate licensed VTS operators, contributing significantly to the country’s tech ecosystem. This initiative will also play a vital role in boosting government revenue, further enriching the economy.”
