As artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies become increasingly integral to everyday life, teachers must deepen their technological knowledge to keep pace with students who are becoming more proficient in information technology, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of an orientation training course for officers of the 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) cadre at the Rural Development Academy in Bogura today.

Addressing newly appointed teachers, the minister said they must create opportunities for students who sit at the back of classrooms or lack the confidence to ask questions. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of teachers to encourage those students to speak up and participate.

He also said research is essential for the development of education and teachers. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given the education sector the highest priority toward that goal, he added. The minister urged all teachers to work sincerely, putting aside political and ideological differences, to help build the Bangladesh of the future.

A total of 613 newly appointed officers of the General Education cadre are participating in the eight-day orientation course.

The event was chaired by Dr. Sardar Md. Keramat Ali, secretary (routine charge) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division. Special guests who spoke at the event included Rezaul Karim Badsha, member of parliament for Bogura-6; Nazmun Nahar Baby, member of the executive committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and vice-president of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal; Professor Dr. Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education; and Md. Abdul Majid Pramanik, acting director general of the Rural Development Academy in Bogura.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr. Wasim Md. Mezbahul Haque, director general of the National Academy for Educational Management.

Speaking to journalists after the event, the minister addressed the issue of students who fail examinations. He said preparations could be made to hold examinations within 15 days because two sets of question papers are available—one used and the other kept unused. However, students must be given a reasonable amount of time to prepare.

“We do not want to carry this legacy of failure year after year,” the minister said. He added that students who fail even after being given another opportunity would be transferred to vocational education.

The minister then attended as chief guest the inauguration of Khan Academy Bangladesh’s activities in 100 schools. Through this initiative, Khan Academy’s educational support programme is being expanded to another 100 schools across Bogura, Netrokona and Cox’s Bazar.

Later, the minister planted a tree sapling on the premises of the Rural Development Academy Laboratory School and College.
