Veteran Freedom Fighter Salam Parvez Fakir Buried
- His funeral prayer was held Tuesday at Nikrail Palashia Rani Dinmoni High School
- He was buried with state honours at Naluya cemetery
- He died aged 75 in Chennai on September 25 while receiving treatment
The funeral prayer and burial of veteran political figure and freedom fighter Salam Parvez Faqir, uncle of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam, were held on Tuesday, September 29. After a guard of honour was accorded with state honours, he was buried in the designated area for freedom fighters at Naluya cemetery in Nikrail.
The funeral prayer was held after Zuhr at the grounds of Nikrail Palashia Rani Dinmoni High School in Nikrail Union, Bhuapur upazila. Earlier, the upazila administration paid floral tribute and accorded him a guard of honour.
Before the prayer, Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam recalled Salam Parvez Faqir, saying, “Although the late Salam Parvez Faqir was my uncle, he was like a friend. He was a front-line soldier of 1971. We grew up together from childhood. I have many childhood memories with him. He was one of those whose sacrifices gave us the Bangladesh we have today. He is no longer among us. We will all pass away one day. I ask everyone to pray for the salvation of his soul.”
Those attending the funeral included Tangail-2 (Bhuapur-Gopalpur) MP Advocate Abdus Salam Pintu; Tangail District BNP President Hasanuzzaman Shaheen; Tangail District Freedom Fighters’ Command President and freedom fighter Abdul Aziz; Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahbub Hasan; Bhuapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge A K M Rezaul Karim; Bhuapur Upazila BNP President Advocate Golam Mostafa; General Secretary Selimuzzaman Talukder Selu; and Dhanbari Upazila BNP President Principal M Azizur Rahman. Political, social and cultural leaders from district and upazila levels, along with a large number of members of the public, also attended.
Salam Parvez Faqir had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Chennai, India, for complications including high blood pressure and diabetes. He died there on September 25 at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and many relatives, well-wishers and admirers.
