AMD to Acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs in $8.2 Billion Deal

Semiconductor and processor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced plans to acquire World Labs, a research-focused startup founded by renowned artificial intelligence scientist Fei-Fei Li.

Through an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion, AMD is strengthening its position in research on physical AI, an emerging branch of artificial intelligence designed to understand and interact with the real world.

The transaction is expected to be formally completed by the end of this year.

Notably, earlier this year, World Labs received $1 billion in funding from investment funds associated with globally renowned organisations.

Spatial Intelligence and Technological Potential

World Labs specialises in spatial intelligence, which enables AI systems to understand and simulate three-dimensional environments and the physical world.

The technology is expected to accelerate future developments in robotics, automated design, virtual simulation and a wide range of realistic applications.

The two companies had already been collaborating since last year, using AMD processors and GPUs to train models and optimise inference. The acquisition is expected to align AMD’s hardware and software ecosystem more closely with AI technologies designed to operate in the physical world.

Leadership Changes and Market Impact

Dr Fei-Fei Li, a pioneer in computer vision and AI research, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist following the acquisition. She will report directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su.

At a time of soaring global demand for chips and AI infrastructure, the acquisition is expected to strengthen AMD’s position not merely as a chip manufacturer, but also as a leading innovator in next-generation physical AI technologies and software frameworks.
