WhatsApp Tests Redesigned Android Navigation Bar with Meta AI
Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is working on a redesigned layout for its Android app, introducing visual changes intended to make the interface more user-friendly and appealing.
The main focus of the redesign is the app’s bottom navigation bar. According to reports from app trackers, Meta plans to add its artificial intelligence feature, Meta AI, as a permanent option on the navigation bar.
Previously, Meta AI appeared as a floating icon just above the message-compose button. Under the new design, it will become part of the app’s main navigation menu.
Modernised Design and Interface Changes
As part of the update, the new Android navigation bar is being redesigned with a slightly oval shape and a semi-transparent appearance. The new layout bears a strong resemblance to the messaging navigation bar in Apple’s iOS operating system.
However, rather than adopting the fully transparent design used in iOS, WhatsApp’s interface maintains a degree of visual balance to avoid distracting users. Android users will be able to access the redesigned interface in both light and dark modes.
Beta Testing and Rollout Plans
The design changes were first spotted in WhatsApp’s experimental Android beta version 2.26.38.10. Currently, a limited number of users enrolled in the beta programme are getting the opportunity to try out the new interface.
Meta may need several more weeks to finalise the feature’s details before officially rolling it out to general users through the Google Play Store.
