Many people pay a monthly fee to access the premium features of the AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT. However, some users are now considering cancelling their subscriptions because they do not use the service regularly or because the features they value have changed.

Several ChatGPT capabilities are now available for free or through comparatively lower-cost plans, making it harder for some users to justify continuing a monthly payment.

In addition, OpenAI's recent changes to its ChatGPT model lineup, including the retirement of the popular GPT-4o model, have caused dissatisfaction among some users. Policy debates surrounding OpenAI's agreements with the US Department of Defense have also prompted some people to reconsider their use of the service.

The Correct Way to Cancel Your Subscription

The cancellation procedure primarily depends on where the subscription was purchased. Users who subscribed directly through ChatGPT's website can cancel it from their ChatGPT account. The current OpenAI Help Center instructs web subscribers to open their account menu, go to Settings, then Account, and select the relevant cancellation option. Users should cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to avoid being charged for another subscription period.

Users who subscribed through an iPhone or Android app must cancel the subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play, respectively. Simply deleting the ChatGPT app from a smartphone does not cancel the subscription or stop future charges.

Data Protection and Account Deletion

Cancelling a paid subscription does not automatically delete the user's ChatGPT account or existing conversation history.

Users who do not want their new conversations to be used to improve OpenAI's models can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings → Data Controls. Their conversations can remain in their chat history even after this setting is disabled.

However, anyone wishing to permanently remove their ChatGPT account and associated data must separately request account deletion. Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. OpenAI says it generally deletes account data within 30 days, although some limited information may be retained for longer when required or permitted by law.

Users with subscriptions purchased through Apple or Google should also remember that deleting the OpenAI account does not cancel those mobile subscriptions. They must cancel the subscription through the relevant app store to prevent further charges.

Refunds and Remaining Subscription Period

Cancelling a subscription does not normally result in an automatic refund of previous payments. Instead, cancellation stops future renewals, while paid features generally remain available until the end of the current billing period.

For accidental purchases, users can generally request a refund if they contact OpenAI within 14 days of the charge. For subscriptions purchased through ChatGPT or Google Play, refund requests are handled through OpenAI Support; Apple App Store purchases require users to request refunds directly from Apple.

Users in the European Union, United Kingdom or Turkey can receive a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase, subject to the applicable conditions.
