Discussions in Ulaanbaatar highlight remote sensing, GIS, and clean tech integration
Environment Minister Holds 4 Bilateral Talks at COP17
- Bilateral engagements prioritize GIS mapping, remote sensing, and drought early-warning systems
- High-level talks with India, Mongolia, and IOM cover battery energy storage and climate migration
- Frameworks initiated for bilateral MoUs, pilot research initiatives, and tech-driven ecosystem restoration
Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintu held four high-level bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Relevant diplomatic sources confirmed the engagements on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Discussions focused on integrating spatial technology, land degradation neutrality, renewable energy systems, and climate adaptation frameworks. Minister Abdul Awal Mintu stated, "Addressing cross-border environmental disruptions requires robust regional and global technology-sharing partnerships. Bangladesh aims to share its localized ecosystem management practices while adopting advanced technological interventions from partner nations."
During talks with Indian Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, both sides prioritized deploying remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for Sundarbans coastal monitoring, alongside technical exchanges in battery energy storage systems (BESS) and land-efficient solar installations.
In discussions with Mongolian Environment Minister Sandag-Ochir Tsend, both delegates agreed to draft a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) targeting pasture management, drought early-warning systems, and joint pilot research. Additional sessions with Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh addressed bilateral trade and skilled labor mobility, while talks with IOM Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels centered on climate-induced migration tracking and vulnerable community support frameworks.
