The government has officially permitted the direct commercial import of Completely Built-Up (CBU) motorcycles with engine displacements of up to 375 cubic centimeters (cc), significantly lifting the previous ceiling. The Ministry of Commerce published the formal statutory gazette under the 'Import Policy Order 2026–2029', industry sources confirmed on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.

Under the preceding Import Policy Order (2021–2024), commercial imports of finished motorcycles above 165cc were strictly restricted. The revised policy, signed into effect on Monday, 24 August 2026, allows authorized importers to bring high-performance and mid-capacity global brand motorcycles directly into the domestic market. Industry observers note that while this liberalizes choice and brings advanced automotive engineering to the country, it will introduce fresh competition for domestic assembly and manufacturing facilities.

In addition to the motorcycle segment, the updated trade policy introduces substantial trade facilitation reforms. Importers across industrial and commercial categories are now permitted to import goods through formal sales contracts without mandatory value ceilings, removing the exclusive dependence on Letters of Credit (LCs). The regulatory framework also outlines provisions for developing designated Free Trade Zones (FTZs) and central bonded warehouse facilities.

The new trade directive further expands import facilities for non-resident Bangladeshi (NRB) investors targeting local manufacturing setups, while streamlining raw material imports for 100% export-oriented industries to align with international trading standards.
