Honor debuts ‘Robot Phone’

Chinese technology company Honor has launched its highly anticipated ‘robot phone,' which is currently available for pre-order in China. This handset integrates a fully motorized gimbal directly and developed with German cinema camera legend ARRI. 

Speaking of the device, James Li, CEO of HONOR, opined, “Hardware sets the foundation for image quality, while algorithms deliver the leap. But technology is only the foundation, what ultimately defines great imaging is aesthetics.”

He added, “Together with ARRI, we will continue to push the boundaries of creation and inspire a new generation of creators.”

A camera that moves like a robot
The phone’s biggest attraction is its automated pop-up camera gimbal, designed to make photography and videography considerably easier. Made of titanium, the gimbal can rotate through 360 degrees and move in different directions, enabling shots that are difficult to capture with a conventional smartphone. It includes several cinematic shooting modes, such as Tilt Lock, FPV View and SpinShot.

The device also features an integrated AI algorithm for subject tracking. The camera can automatically follow a person’s movements by panning and tilting. Users can also open the camera arm and take photos using hand gestures.

Dual 200-megapixel camera system
The camera setup includes a powerful combination of a 200-megapixel main camera and a 200-megapixel telephoto lens. Through a partnership with professional cinema-camera manufacturer ARRI, the phone offers AI-assisted noise reduction, a wide dynamic range and RAW file output with real-time preview.

AI-powered ‘robot mode’
The phone runs on the MagicOS operating system and introduces a feature called ‘YOYO Robot Mode.' It combines multimodal perception, contextual understanding, gesture recognition and physical movement.

As a result, the gimbal can dance to music, nod in response to approval, or rotate according to voice commands.

Honor is also opening the platform to third-party developers, allowing them to use the phone’s multimodal capabilities and embodied interaction features to create new user experiences.

Flagship hardware
Beyond its robotic camera, the device comes with high-end smartphone specifications. It is powered by the Snapdragon Elite Gen 5 processor and features a dedicated cooling system and a large 7,060mAh battery.

The phone has a 6.3-inch OLED display with adaptive refresh-rate support and a peak brightness of up to 6,800 nits.

In China, pre-orders are currently available in two configurations: 12GB RAM with 512GB storage and 16GB RAM with 1TB storage.Official deliveries are scheduled to begin on August 1.

The 12GB version is priced at approximately $1,480, while the 16GB version costs around $2,075. 

While expressing excitement over the unveiling of the new phone, Honor Bangladesh did not immediately disclose when it would arrive in Bangladesh or how much it might cost.
