Bangladesh is moving forward with two major waste-to-energy projects aimed at transforming municipal waste into clean electricity while strengthening sustainable urban management and renewable energy generation. Prime Minister Tarek Rahman has directed authorities to complete both projects within the scheduled timeframe and ensure the use of the best available environmentally friendly technologies.

The directive came during a meeting held on Sunday morning at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, according to Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Swadhin.

Under the plan, China's CMEC Group will invest in a waste-to-energy power plant at Aminbazar under Dhaka North City Corporation. The facility will process approximately 3,000 tonnes of municipal waste per day to generate 42.5 megawatts of electricity. Power generation is expected to begin by August 2028, supplying electricity to the national grid for an estimated 25 years.

Meanwhile, South Korea's B&F Company will implement an integrated waste management and power generation project at Matuail under Dhaka South City Corporation. The project aims to produce around 15,000 tonnes of methane annually, with an annual electricity generation capacity of approximately 81,000 megawatt-hours, equivalent to an average daily output of about 221 megawatt-hours.

The facility will also produce solar power, organic fertilizer, animal feed, and eco-friendly bricks, while processing between 3,000 and 3,500 tonnes of waste every day.

Officials said the projects are expected to significantly improve urban waste management, reduce methane emissions, support climate action, and promote a circular economy by converting waste into valuable energy and industrial resources.

The Prime Minister also instructed the Local Government, Power, and Environment ministries to hold an inter-ministerial coordination meeting to expedite implementation.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Principal Secretary A.B.M. Abdus Sattar, Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon, and administrators of Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations.
