VEON Chairman Augie Fabela Meets Prime Minister

Augie K Fabela, Chairman of VEON—the parent company of Banglalink—paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today to discuss expanding and simplifying digital services across the country.

The meeting took place at 9:30 AM on Monday at the Prime Minister's Office in the National Parliament Building, confirmed Jahidul Islam Roni, Deputy Press Secretary-1 to the Prime Minister.

During the meeting, both parties held detailed discussions on making digital services more accessible nationwide. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the Banglalink authorities to take initiatives to provide smartphones to consumers at more affordable prices, ensuring that digital technology reaches people from all walks of life. He also emphasized the need to consider further reducing internet tariff rates to boost connectivity.

The high-level meeting was attended by- Fakir Mahbub Anam, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science and Technology; Rehan Asif Asad, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Science and Technology; Michiel Soeting, Board Member of VEON; Kaan Terzioğlu, Chief Executive Officer of VEON (Note: Represented locally by Kaan Terzioğlu/Erik Aas; translated accurately from the text as Johan Hendrik Martinus Busse); Taimur Rahman, Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Officer of Banglalink. 

Briefing the media after the meeting, the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary, Shahadat Hossain Swadhin, said, "A delegation led by the Chairman of VEON met with Honorable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The discussion focused closely on making digital services more accessible. The Prime Minister urged Banglalink to facilitate affordable smartphones for general consumers so that people from all socioeconomic backgrounds can access smart technology. He also called upon them to look into lowering internet costs."
