Leading U.S. space technology company SpaceX has secured a major defense contract from the Pentagon. On Friday, the U.S. military’s space branch, the United States Space Force, announced that it had awarded a $4.16 billion contract to the Elon Musk-led company to develop an advanced satellite network capable of detecting, tracking and identifying potential airborne military threats and missile activities with high precision.

The deal is considered one of the largest and most strategically significant defense contracts of the year for SpaceX, which is reportedly preparing for a future public market offering.

Designed to Eliminate Military Surveillance Blind Spots

The project has been officially named the Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program. It is envisioned as an interconnected “system of systems” that will integrate advanced space-based sensors, secure military communications links and sophisticated ground-processing infrastructure.

According to a statement from the United States Space Force, the initial objective is to deploy a robust satellite constellation by 2028. The network is expected to eliminate temporary surveillance blind spots faced by U.S. joint military forces and significantly enhance their ability to detect and respond to airborne threats across future battlefields.

Key Component of the Golden Dome Missile Defense Initiative

The satellite network will serve as a critical sensing and tracking layer within the Trump administration’s Golden Dome missile defense architecture.

The broader Golden Dome initiative, valued at approximately $185 billion, aims to expand the capabilities of ground-based interceptors, sensors and command systems while incorporating space-based surveillance assets capable of tracking and helping counter long-range missile threats from orbit.

Officials noted that the SB-AMTI program is expected to become a cornerstone of future U.S. missile warning and defense operations.

Additional Defense Contracts Expected

The United States Space Force indicated that, although SpaceX is a primary contractor for the project, several other major companies are also participating. Additional contracts may be awarded to other industry partners in the coming years as the program expands.

Strengthening SpaceX’s Defense Market Position

The contract further strengthens SpaceX’s position in the defense and aerospace sectors as the company reportedly pursues a future valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion through a potential public offering.

The latest award follows another major defense agreement announced only days earlier, under which the United States Space Force granted SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract to develop a highly secure, high-speed satellite communications network designed to connect military sensors and weapons platforms worldwide.

With the addition of the new $4.16 billion agreement, SpaceX has further solidified its role as one of the most influential players in the rapidly expanding space-defense industry, reinforcing Elon Musk’s growing presence in the global defense technology market.
