DMP Deploys CCTV, Watch Towers Ahead of Eid Cattle Markets
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has adopted an integrated security plan to strengthen safety measures at cattle markets across the capital ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The initiative includes additional police deployment, installation of CCTV cameras, police camps, watch towers, and counterfeit currency detection machines.
On Friday, May 22, DMP spokesperson and Deputy Commissioner N M Nasiruddin told state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) that both uniformed and plainclothes police personnel would remain deployed at all cattle markets and adjacent areas across the capital. Vehicle and motorcycle patrol teams will also conduct round-the-clock monitoring.
He said all cattle markets would be brought under CCTV surveillance coverage. In addition, police camps and watch towers would be installed at the markets. Twenty-four-hour police checkpoints will also operate on major entry and exit roads of the capital.
Regarding counterfeit currency prevention, N M Nasiruddin said adequate fake note detection machines would be installed at the markets. DMP will supply 150 such machines, while city corporations, market leaseholders, and banks have been requested to arrange additional devices.
He added that a special drive against counterfeit currency syndicates has been ongoing since May 1. Several individuals have already been arrested from different parts of the capital along with counterfeit notes and related equipment.
The DMP official also said police had been placed on high alert to prevent mugging and extortion centering Eid activities. According to him, more than 1,900 criminals, including muggers, drug traders, and extortionists, have been arrested so far under the special operation launched on May 1. Among them are around 200 listed extortionists and 400 unlisted extortionists.
He further stated that the “money escort” service would continue this year as well for the safe transportation of large sums of money. Additional police members, including female officers, will also be deployed at shopping malls and commercial areas across the capital.
According to DMP, patrol activities in residential areas will be intensified during Eid holidays to prevent theft and robbery as many residents leave Dhaka during the festival period.
This year, a total of 27 cattle markets will operate in the capital. Of them, 11 will fall under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation and 16 under Dhaka North City Corporation. The permanent Sarulia cattle market will remain closed this year due to land acquisition by the Water Development Board.
City corporation officials said special measures would also be implemented at temporary cattle markets to manage traffic congestion, waste management, public health, water supply, and overall security.
