Mac Pro Phases Out: Apple Ends Production of Its Flagship Desktop

Apple has discontinued production of its well-known desktop computer, the Mac Pro. First introduced in 2006, the computer had served as Apple’s flagship desktop model for nearly two decades. Recently, the product has been removed from Apple’s website, reports GSMArena.

The Mac Pro was first launched in 2006 as the successor to the Power Mac G5. Its modular design was the main attraction—users could replace the CPU, memory, optical drive, and PCI expansion cards. This format remained unchanged until 2012.

In 2013, Apple introduced a controversial redesign of the Mac Pro, which later became known as the “Trashcan Mac.” Unlike the previous tower design, this model was compact but featured largely integrated components, limiting modularity. Only memory and storage could be upgraded. It was later revealed that the design could not be sustained due to cooling limitations.

In 2019, the third and final major redesign marked a return to the traditional modular approach. All components except the CPU could be replaced. This was the last Mac Pro to use Intel CPUs, as Apple subsequently began transitioning to its own M-series chips. In 2023, the model was updated with the M2 Ultra chip, which became the final version of the lineup. With the shift to M-series chips, limitations emerged in connectivity through PCI slots, reducing the product’s appeal among enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, the Mac Studio has taken over as Apple’s most powerful desktop. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple had long been planning to discontinue the Mac Pro. Analysts say there was little left to incorporate into the Mac Pro’s large, open chassis, and modularity no longer aligned with the concept of modern Macs. Therefore, they consider Apple’s decision to be a natural one. However, the Mac Pro will remain memorable in the world of computing for its timeless design and professional performance.
