Cybercrime risks typically increase around major international sporting events, as cybercriminals exploit fan enthusiasm to carry out various forms of fraud. In this context, global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has worked to strengthen cyber defenses through coordination with law enforcement agencies and by raising awareness among audiences. In connection with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the company shared threat intelligence with Interpol to enhance security measures.

This information was provided by Kaspersky Bangladesh on Sunday, 29 March.

According to the company, Kaspersky’s Digital Footprint Intelligence team identified more than 2.1 million leaked login credentials associated with users in Morocco. During the same period, hacktivist activities also increased toward the end of 2025, including notable incidents of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks and website defacement. In addition, multiple fraudulent websites were detected that attempted to lure users with fake ticket sales and prize offers, aiming to steal personal and financial information.

Yulia Shlychkova, Vice President of Global Public Affairs at Kaspersky, said, “Large international events are attractive targets for cybercriminals. They target millions of spectators with various fraudulent activities. In such situations, coordinated efforts between public and private institutions are crucial to prevent cybercrime and ensure a safe environment for audiences. Kaspersky is working alongside Interpol in this initiative to help ensure global cybersecurity.”

Adrian Hia, Managing Director for Asia-Pacific at Kaspersky, added, “International sporting events remain one of the primary targets for cybercriminals. Risks such as credential leaks, hacktivist activities, and event-related fraud are increasing. Cooperation with Interpol and local authorities is essential to address these threats. Kaspersky will continue to work toward ensuring the security of spectators, participants, and host countries through global threat intelligence sharing and awareness initiatives.”

Such initiatives, led by Interpol, play a significant role in ensuring the security of major international events. Kaspersky has already participated in various cybersecurity activities jointly with Interpol. Recently, the company was also involved in similar collaborative efforts during major global events such as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the Formula One Singapore Grand Prix 2025.
