Nissan Motor, Uber Technologies and British startup Wayve have jointly announced plans to launch robotaxi services. The announcement was made during a joint press conference in Tokyo on Thursday (12 March), according to Reuters.

Under the agreement, a pilot project will be launched in Tokyo by the end of 2026. Wayve’s autonomous driving technology will be installed in Nissan’s Nissan Leaf electric vehicles. These cars will be made available to customers through Uber’s platform. During the initial phase, a trained safety driver will remain inside the vehicles.

This marks Uber’s first autonomous vehicle partnership in Japan. Wayve Chief Executive Alex Kendall said the company has been testing its technology in Japan since early 2025.

Nissan Chief Executive Ivan Espinosa told reporters that discussions are underway regarding the potential expansion of this collaboration to markets outside Japan.

Backed by funding from SoftBank and NVIDIA, Wayve signed a partnership agreement with Uber in August 2024. The two companies aim to launch their services in more than 10 cities worldwide, including London.

In September 2025, Nissan said it was testing driver-assistance systems using Wayve’s technology with the goal of launching autonomous driving services in Japan by the 2027 fiscal year.
