Meta has signed a multi-million dollar agreement to use content from News Corp, one of the world’s largest news media organizations, to train its artificial intelligence (AI) models and supply information to its chatbots. Citing Reuters, Engadget reported that under the agreement, Meta will pay up to $50 million annually.

The deal, set for at least three years, will allow Meta to use News Corp’s content in the United States and the United Kingdom. The agreement covers content from brands including The Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Barron’s, London’s The Times, The Sun, and publishing house HarperCollins.

Meta has recently been restructuring its AI team and working toward developing its next-generation models. In recent months, the company has signed licensing agreements with several media outlets, including USA Today, People, CNN, and Fox News.

News Corp CEO Robert Thomson hinted at the agreement during Morgan Stanley’s annual Technology, Media and Telecom (TMT) conference. He described news media as a valuable “input” for AI. Thomson characterized the company’s strategy toward AI firms as “attract or sue”—partnering with those willing to license content, while pursuing legal action against those that use content without permission.

Previously, in 2024, News Corp signed a five-year deal worth approximately $250 million with OpenAI. In contrast, The New York Times has taken a different approach, filing a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.
