Ali Hossain Fakir made new IGP
Md Ali Hossain Fakir has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). He has been promoted from the position of Additional Inspector General (Additional IGP) of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) to IGP, succeeding the current IGP Baharul Alam.
This information was announced in a notification issued on Tuesday, 24th February, by the Police-1 branch of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The notification was signed by Deputy Secretary Tausif Ahmed on the order of the President.
Sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that Ali Hossain Fakir is a member of the 15th BCS (Police) cadre. He hails from Bagerhat. Born in 1968 in a respectable Muslim family in the Sadar Thana of the district, Ali Hossain Fakir obtained Bachelor's, Master's, and MBA degrees from the Department of Management at Dhaka University. He currently holds the position of acting president of the Police Service Association.
During his career, he was compulsorily retired in 2022 by the then Awami League government. During that time, besides various private institutions, this police officer also served as the administrative head of the internet service provider ICC Communication ltd.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in the mass uprising on 5th August 2024, many police officers who had been ‘victims of deprivation’ over the past decade and a half were reinstated into the force. After returning to the police as Superintendent of Police (SP), Ali Hossain Fakir was promoted to Deputy Inspector General (DIG). Subsequently, he served as DIG at the Police Headquarters and the Special Protection Battalion (SPBN). Most recently, he was working as Additional IGP in the APBN.
The Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUA) has extended its heartfelt congratulations and warm wishes to Md. Ali Hossain Fakir upon his appointment as IGP. In a joint statement, the convenor of DUA, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, and member secretary ATM Abdul Bari Danny conveyed their congratulations and wished him continued success and a long life in his new career.
Md. Ali Hossain Fakir joined the Bangladesh Police as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in 1995 through the 15th BCS.
He joined as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1995 through the 15th BCS cadre. Subsequently, he served as Superintendent of Police in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura districts. He also held the position of Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He served as the Commandant of the Range Reserve Force (RRF) in Sylhet. Furthermore, he was the Commanding Officer of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Khulna-3, APBn Dhaka-5, and APBn Sylhet-7. Ali Hossain Fakir served in UN peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and the Ivory Coast on behalf of the Bangladesh Police. After returning from his mission in the Ivory Coast, he was attached to the Rajshahi Range DIG's office in January 2013. He was not given any further significant responsibilities or promotions after this.
Ali Hossain Fakir's wife, Professor Nasima Ferdousi, is the Head of the Finance Department at Government Titumir College. They have a son and a daughter.
