Bangladesh has called for increased British investment and technology transfer in the country's shipbuilding, maritime engineering, and port-based industries as part of efforts to modernize its maritime infrastructure and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

The appeal was made by Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam during a bilateral meeting with UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander in London, according to an official statement released on Friday (10 July).

During the meeting, the minister emphasized the importance of expanding investment, joint ventures, technology transfer, and public-private partnerships (PPP) to accelerate the development of Bangladesh's shipbuilding industry, maritime engineering capabilities, port infrastructure, and marine transport systems. He also highlighted the need to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries.

Sheikh Robiul Alam further requested UK support in simplifying OKTB and other transit and seafarer visa procedures for Bangladeshi sailors serving on international vessels.

The minister noted that Bangladesh remains committed to implementing the Hong Kong International Convention to ensure internationally compliant ship recycling practices. Of the country's 42 ship recycling yards, 27 have already met international standards, while the remaining facilities are being upgraded.

He also reaffirmed Bangladesh's support for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmentally friendly technologies, green growth, and sustainable maritime transport.

Both sides expressed their commitment to expanding cooperation in transport, shipping, railways, port development, trade, and investment. The Bangladeshi minister concluded the meeting by inviting the UK Transport Secretary to visit Bangladesh.
