Clashes broke out in phases between two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) centering on the change of proctor at Gopalganj Science and Technology University. In the clashes, JCD Vice-President Zahirul Islam Zahir and Publicity Secretary Nahidur Rahman Sakib were injured. Critically injured Nahidur Rahman Sakib was taken to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital by ambulance.

Sources said the current Proctor of the university, Dr. Arifuzzaman Rajib, was relieved of his duties and Dr. Ahsan Saurav, a teacher of the ASVM department, was appointed as the new Proctor. Tension erupted over this decision around 4:30pm on Sunday, February 22, in front of the university’s administrative building, leading to সংঘর্ষ between two factions of JCD.

Eyewitnesses said that when one faction of JCD took position opposing the change of proctor, an argument broke out with the other faction, which later escalated into clashes. Chases and counter-chases ensued in the field adjacent to the administrative building and surrounding areas.

Regarding the incident, JCD Joint General Secretary Shafiqul Islam alleged that when Vice-President Zahir went to express solidarity with the ongoing movement of ASVM department students, he behaved disrespectfully with the Chairman of the Public Administration Department. When others protested, Zahir allegedly attacked Publicity Secretary Nahid, and several individuals later assaulted Nahid.

On the other hand, Vice-President Zahirul Islam Zahir claimed that a misunderstanding arose over a push while entering the room of a JCD leader named Anwar. During a scuffle, Nahidur Rahman Sakib allegedly attacked him. At the same time, a teacher grabbed him by the collar, after which several people assaulted him, he said.

Following the incident, a tense situation has been prevailing on campus. One faction of JCD has been staging a blockade programme outside the administrative building, while the other faction remains positioned inside.

Commenting on the matter, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Hossain Uddin Sheikh said efforts are underway to resolve the issue. “We hope the situation will return to normal soon,” he added.
