Social Spotlight: New PM’s Facebook Page Launches

The day after taking the oath as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman has had a new Facebook page created in his name. This page will provide updates on the daily activities of the new Prime Minister.

The page went live on Wednesday, 18 February. Among its first posts is a video of Tarique Rahman laying a floral wreath at the Savar Memorial to honor the nation’s valiant freedom fighters. The page also features moments from his oath-taking ceremony on 17 February.

In the 13th National Parliamentary elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a commanding majority with 212 seats. The party chairman, Tarique Rahman, contested and won from both Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies, later vacating the Bogura-6 seat.

On 17 February, four days after voting, Tarique Rahman took the oath as the country’s new Prime Minister at the South Plaza of the National Parliament in the afternoon. Members of his new cabinet were sworn in simultaneously.

Earlier that morning, BNP’s victorious parliamentarians took their oaths, followed by 77 elected members from the Jamaat-e-Islami coalition, who will assume the role of the opposition in the National Parliament.
