Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded that the relevant authorities submit an investigation report and update on progress within 24 hours following the hacking of the verified X (formerly Twitter) account of the party’s Amir, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. On 3 February, Tuesday at 4:00 pm, a delegation led by Sirajul Islam, planning committee member of Jamaat’s central election management committee, submitted a written complaint regarding the incident at Bangabhaban.

According to Jamaat, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s X account was compromised by hackers after 4:00 pm on 31 January. At 4:37 pm, an unwanted and objectionable post was published from the account. Once identified, the central IT team promptly took action, regaining full control of the account by changing the password at 5:09 pm. At 5:22 pm, an urgent announcement was issued to inform about the hacking.

A general diary (GD) was filed at the police station the same night, and the following morning, a press briefing detailed the incident to media representatives. The briefing also included a presentation on the source and method of the hacking, Jamaat stated.

Internal investigation revealed that a phishing email was sent to multiple official addresses, including Jamaat’s central official email, through which control of the device was gained. Jamaat alleged that the phishing email had been sent from a government email address associated with Bangabhaban.

Claiming lack of response, the party submitted the complaint in person at Bangabhaban today. During the meeting, the President’s Military Secretary, Major General Mohammad Adil Chowdhury, assured the delegation that the matter has already been communicated to the relevant agencies, and an investigation is underway. He confirmed that the report and necessary actions would be prepared promptly.

Given the upcoming elections, Jamaat emphasized the urgency of the matter and formally requested the government to release the investigation progress and report within the next 24 hours.

Jamaat strongly condemned the incident, calling the use of a government-related email for phishing and hacking attempts a matter of national concern. The party also alleged that the situation is being used for political misinformation campaigns.
