Bangladesh and Japan have signed an agreement on the exchange of defense equipment and technical assistance, marking a significant milestone in bilateral military cooperation.

According to a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday, 3 February, the agreement was signed at Dhaka Cantonment under the overall supervision of the Armed Forces Division (AFD).

ISPR stated that the agreement was signed on behalf of Bangladesh by Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, while Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Saida Shinichi signed on behalf of Japan.

Through this agreement, the strategic partnership and long-standing friendship between the two countries have been elevated to a new height, ISPR noted. Sources at the Armed Forces Division said the signing of the agreement was made possible as a result of close and sustained efforts by both sides since 2023. The agreement reflects deep mutual trust, a shared vision, and cooperation between the two nations—achievements made possible through the foresighted and effective diplomacy of Bangladesh’s interim government.

The agreement is expected to further accelerate Bangladesh’s defense modernization process. It has been executed in full alignment with the principles of the United Nations Charter and will establish an institutional framework for acquiring advanced defense equipment and technologies, as well as for joint research and development. This framework aims to strengthen international peace and security while safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

At the same time, the agreement is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between Bangladesh and Japan in South Asia, contributing significantly to regional stability and global security.

With the signing of this historic agreement, exchanges of military experts between the two countries are expected to increase. Such cooperation is anticipated to play an important role in enhancing Bangladesh’s defense capabilities and implementing future strategic plans. It is also expected to further strengthen strategic relations and military cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan.
